GEORGE MOORE

When racing turned professional in 1971/72 the Jockey Club was keen to attract top international talent to raise the standard of local racing. George Moore arrived from Australia in the 1972/73 season. A legendary jockey in Australia, where he had ridden 2,278 winners in a 32-year career, including 119 winners at Group One level in Australia, France and Britain, George Moore soon established himself as “King of the Valley”.

A consummate professional and a very knowledgeable horseman, George was ably assisted by sons Gary and John in the saddle. Gary Moore was seven times champion jockey and, eldest son, John has since gone on to establish a formidable training career in his own right (champion trainer five times with, to the end of the 2008/09 season, 1,078 winners to his credit). In his 13-year career under licence in Hong Kong, George Moore was champion trainer a most impressive 11 times. Among his top horses were Super Win and Silver Lining.
