SIR PAUL CHATER

A merchant trader and banker of Armenian descent, born in Calcutta in 1846, Mr Catchick Paul Chater, later to be knighted and known as "Sir Paul", was a keen Hong Kong racing man most of his life. He first attended a meeting at Happy Valley in 1865. He was one of the founding members when The Hong Kong Jockey Club was formed in 1884.

He was Chairman from 1892 until his death in 1926. He introduced his friend Sir Hormusjee Mody (Mody Road was named after him) to racing and they once owned a stable together with great success.

In 1884, Sir Paul and Sir Hormusjee won 17 out of the 26 races in total over the years, Sir Paul won eight Hong Kong Derbies while his friend, Sir Hormusjee, won eleven. Sir Paul is credited with guiding the Jockey Club through its early years. He established the precedent of any surplus being donated to charity in 1915, and championed a special resolution admitting Chinese to membership of the Club in 1926, almost his last act as Chairman before he died.
