A private purchase
from Ireland, Indigenous soon established his supremacy at 2400
metres. Handled by two different trainers in his first Hong Kong
season, he began his second season in the hands of a third trainer,
then champion trainer and acknowledged maestro, Ivan Allan. The
two became inextricably linked. After winning five races, all of
them trophy races, including the Gold Cup and the Champions and
Chater Cup, for Ivan Allan in his first season with him, Indigenous
became the top-rated horse in Hong Kong.
In the 1998/99 season, Indigenous won four more trophy races, including
the Hong Kong International Vase at 2400 metres. In the summer of
1999, Ivan Allan took the horse to England for the "King George"
a top International Group One event, over 2400 metres. Indigenous
ran 6th. Not discouraged, Indigenous then lined up in the Japan
Cup, in November, and ran 2nd. It may not have been a win, but that
single minor placing was immensely significant for Hong Kong. It
demonstrated that Hong Kong horses were up to International Group
One standard. |
