As Hong Kong's economy developed in the 1960s and '70s, the need grew for more venues where residents could enjoy healthy entertainment.  The Club committed HK$150 million to build Ocean Park on a 170-acre site in the south of Hong Kong Island and a further HK$240 million for its later expansion.  The park opened in January 1977 and has since become one of Asia's leading tourism attractions, welcoming more than five million local and overseas visitors a year. The Hong Kong Sports Institute at Sha Tin was completed in 1982 as a training and development centre for the city's elite athletes.  At the time it was the first complex of its kind in South-east Asia and one of the largest in the world.  The HK$150 million Institute has since cultivated many outstanding local athletes, including Hong Kong's first Olympic gold medallist, windsurfer Lee Lai-shan, and world champion cyclist Wong Kam-po.
